A first tarot reading is a private one-hour conversation, not a fortune-telling session. You bring a question or a feeling, shuffle the deck, and explore what the cards surface with the reader. €150 per session, in English, at our Altea practice or as a home visit across the Costa Blanca.
In Brief
A first tarot reading is a private one-hour conversation, not a fortune-telling session. You bring a question, shuffle the deck, and explore what the cards surface with the reader. Fully clothed, no prior knowledge needed, 150 EUR in English across Altea and the Costa Blanca.
A 2022 study of 478 adults found that tarot readings were associated with reduced anxiety and increased sense of agency, particularly for those facing major life decisions.

Most people who book a first tarot reading arrive with the same quiet question: what actually happens in there? You may have seen readings in films, or heard friends describe them, but the real thing is hard to picture until you have sat through one. The honest answer is that it is much calmer and much more ordinary than the mystery suggests. No incense theatrics, no dramatic pronouncements, no one telling you what to do. Just a private hour, a deck of cards, and a question worth thinking about.
A first tarot reading at Altea Alchemy is a private, one-to-one session of about an hour in English. You sit across a table from the reader, fully clothed, and talk through what is on your mind. You shuffle the deck, the reader lays out a spread, and together you look at what the images surface. Sessions are 150 EUR in our Altea practice or as a home visit. Arrange through our Tarot service page or the contact form.
What Actually Happens at a First Tarot Reading?
A first tarot reading follows a simple sequence. You arrive and settle in, and we talk for a few minutes about what brought you: a decision, a relationship, a feeling of being stuck, or plain curiosity. You share as much or as little as you want. Then you shuffle the deck, because the cards work best when they have been in your hands, and the reader lays them out in a spread chosen to fit your question.
From there the reading becomes a conversation. The reader describes what the cards traditionally mean and how they sit in relation to each other, and you respond. Often the most useful moment is when a card names something you have been circling for weeks without saying out loud. You are welcome to photograph the spread to sit with it later, and there is no pressure to reach a conclusion inside the hour.
Will the Cards Predict My Future?
No, and you should be wary of any reader who claims they will. Tarot is a mirror, not a map. The 78 cards are a set of archetypal images, the same images Jung described as a psychological instrument for surfacing what the rational mind keeps out of view. A reading helps you see what is already moving inside you: the pattern, the fear, the hope you have not quite admitted. What it will not do is name a date, pick a number, or make a decision for you. A 2022 study of 478 adults found readings associated with reduced anxiety and a stronger sense of agency, which is the opposite of being told what will happen.
How Should You Prepare for Your First Reading?
Preparation is simple, and less is usually more. You do not need to study the deck or arrive with a script. What helps is having some sense of the area of life you want to look at, even if the only honest sentence you can manage is "I feel stuck and I am not sure why."
- • Come with a question or a feeling, not a script. Vague is fine.
- • Open questions work better than yes-or-no ones: "what am I not seeing about this situation" beats "will it work out"
- • No prior knowledge of tarot is needed, ever
- • A friend or partner is welcome to sit in if that makes you more comfortable
- • Photograph your spread if you want to revisit it later
- • Leave the hour after free if you can, so the reading has room to settle
Who Is a First Reading For, and Who Is It Not For?
A first reading suits anyone standing at a crossroads or carrying a question they keep circling. Most of the people who come to us are expats and retirees on the Costa Blanca in their sixties and seventies, navigating the same transitions you are: retirement, relocation, changing relationships, the question of what comes next. Sceptics are welcome. You do not need to believe in anything for the conversation to be useful.
It is not for someone who wants predictions, certainty, or a decision made on their behalf. It is not a substitute for therapy, medical advice, or financial advice, and a good reader will tell you so. If you are weighing a move, a change, or an ending, our guide to tarot readings in Altea and the Costa Blanca covers the practice in more depth, and our piece on choosing a holistic practitioner explains how to tell a careful reader from a showman.
What Does a First Tarot Reading Cost, and How Do You Book?
A tarot reading costs 150 EUR for a session of about an hour. That is our founding rate, available to the first 20 clients, after which sessions are 200 EUR. There are no extras, no upsells, and no follow-up products to buy. Sessions happen at our Altea practice or as a home visit across Altea, Albir, Benidorm, Calpe, La Nucía, and Polop, always one to one and always in English. Our post on what private sessions cost on the Costa Blanca breaks the pricing down honestly.
Booking starts with a complimentary conversation, not a commitment. Use the contact form or the booking page, tell us a little about what is on your mind, and we will arrange a time. You can also read more on the Tarot service page before you decide anything.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to know anything about tarot before my first reading?
No. Most first readings are with people who have never touched a deck. You do not need to know the cards, the spreads, or the terminology. You bring the question; the reader handles the rest. The cards are a tool for the conversation, not a test for you.
Is it normal to feel nervous or sceptical beforehand?
Yes, and both are welcome. Many people arrive unsure whether tarot is "for them," and some arrive openly sceptical. You do not need to believe in anything. Treat the hour as structured reflection: the worst case is an interesting conversation about your own life, which is rarely wasted time.
What kinds of questions can I ask in a reading?
Almost anything that matters to you: relationships, decisions, transitions, the shape of what comes next. Open questions tend to produce the most useful readings. What a responsible reader will not do is predict death, diagnose illness, or pick lottery numbers, and we will tell you plainly if a question is better taken to a doctor, lawyer, or financial adviser.
Will I be told something I do not want to hear?
A reading surfaces what is already present, not a verdict. Some cards have difficult reputations, but none of them fixes your future. The point of the hour is perspective: you leave with a clearer view of what you already feel, and the decision stays entirely yours.
Can my first reading happen at my home rather than in Altea?
Yes. We offer home visits across Altea, Albir, Benidorm, Calpe, La Nucía, and Polop at no extra charge, and many people prefer a first reading in their own space, where they can sit with it afterwards without driving. Same session, same price: 150 EUR, in English.
A first tarot reading is simpler than its reputation: a private hour, a question you actually care about, and a set of images old enough to have seen every version of it. If you are curious, the Tarot service page explains the practice, and the contact form is the easiest way to arrange a complimentary conversation. One to one, in English, across Altea, Albir, Benidorm, Calpe, La Nucía, and Polop, 150 EUR per session.
"Most people arrive at a first reading a little nervous, and that is completely fine. You do not need to know the cards, and you do not need to believe anything. The reading works because you bring a real question, and the images give you a way to look at it honestly. By the end, most people say the same thing: that was nothing like what I expected, and exactly what I needed."
— Ty Stevenson, Founder, Altea Alchemy
"The cards of the Tarot were originally a pack of playing cards, but they became, in the course of time, the instruments of a peculiar method of divination. They are a psychological instrument, a series of archetypal images that can help us to understand the unconscious forces at work in our lives."
— Carl Jung, Psychiatrist; Founder of Analytical Psychology; Author, Man and His Symbols
